Piquette Square, a 150-unit, four-story brick building in downtown Detroit, Mich.  is home to formerly homeless veterans. Developer Southwest Housing Solutions uncovered and cleaned up several environmental problems on the old Studebaker automotive plant site. Veterans living there have access to substance abuse counseling, mental health counseling, on-site job training, educational programs with computer labs and other services to help them develop independent and healthy living skills.

The 130-unit first phase Appleton Mills sparked more than $8 million dollars of federal and state investment in surrounding public infrastructure and has integrated the project with related planning and development initiatives and projects. Other tangible community benefits include upgrading surrounding streets and improving pedestrian connections to the nearby transit terminal, developing the surrounding canal walks and public parks, and cleaning up neighboring brownfields sites.
