Developer: Community Housing of Maine
Location: Brewer, Maine

2017 Rural Community Impact DOD Winner Village Centre

Village Centre, developed by Community Housing of Maine (CHOM) is on land formerly occupied by the State Street School in Brewer, Maine. It’s the first multifamily-certified passive house in New England–a rigorous standard for energy efficiency in a building–and the second-largest certified passive house development in North America. The inclusive housing development integrates 12 units of permanent supportive housing into a large, multifamily development.

“This is the first LIHTC project I have seen with passive house certification,” said Jana Barbe, Development of Distinctions judge. “Reducing the energy consumption footprint for a project of this size is groundbreaking. That coupled with the integration of permanent supportive housing with multifamily housing generally, adds to the feeling of innovation and transformation a project like this generates.”
