2017 QLICI Metro Winner The Commons at Stanton Square

The Commons at Stanton Square is a new campus in Washington, D.C., to deliver social services, education programming and health care to children and families in the Hillsdale neighborhood. The 57,000-square-foot community facility will serve more than 208,000 people, divided between Martha's Table, a 44,000-square-foot facility with healthy start and healthy food programming and administrative needs, and Community of Hope, a 13,000-square-foot federally qualified health center. NMTC allocations from LISC, City First, Morgan Stanley and Capital Impact Partners made the new facility possible.
Given the nature of Martha’s Table’s activities–offering free and below-market community services to the Ward 7 and 8 communities–the NMTCs were critical. Funds that were not provided by NMTCs would likely have been in the form of traditional financing, since additional fundraisingwould have focused on bridging shortfalls in operational needs to maintain the ongoing viability of Martha’s Table’s programming. This would have stressed the operational budget.

“This project provides co-located services to reach a low-income population,” said Elaine DiPietro, a Community Development QLICI of the Year Awards judge. “Having access to healthy food, health care and other social services in one place can make the difference that is needed for a low-income person or family trying to break a cycle of poverty.”
