2017 Operating Business QLICI Winner Detroit Manufacturing System

After five years of operating out of its Detroit headquarters, Detroit Manufacturing System (DMS) is expanding its operations in its current location and in a new site in Toledo, Ohio, financed in part by $35 million in NMTCs provided by four CDEs: Stonehenge Community Development, Consortium America, Building America CDE and Community Reinvestment Fund. The funding will go to purchase and install equipment.

The expansion came after DMS was awarded new contracts with several auto manufacturers. The development would have been difficult, if not impossible, without the NMTC financing. The financing allows the expansion to take place and will help preserve 130 at-risk jobs in Detroit as well as to create 135 jobs in Toledo over the seven-year NMTC timeline.

“DMS is committed to hiring local low-income people and has many jobs that are accessible to people with no experience and no college degree–two barriers that often prevent low-income people from qualifying for good jobs,” said Elaine DiPietro, a Community Development QLICI of the Year Awards judge “The NMTC investment will impact two communities, in both Detroit and Toledo.”
