Location: Escondido, Calif.

Sonoma CourtThe Renewable Energy Power Award for a Small Community Project goes to Affirmed Housing Group for the Sonoma Court Apartments in Escondido, Calif. Affirmed Housing Group produced “a fine job of improving a property and enhancing its sustainability” with this project, notes awards judge Edwin Feo of Coronal Management. Built in 1978, Sonoma Court Apartments officially completed renovations in February 2015 to become more energy-efficient. Affirmed Housing Group installed a solar photovoltaic system, a central boiler system, highly efficient heat pumps, Energy Star appliances, dual-pane windows and a new roof with high solar reflective index. Affirmed Housing Group obtained financing with 4 percent low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) equity from WNC & Associates and taxable bonds from PNC Bank, as well as energy-efficient home Section 45L and investment tax credits.

Focusing on lowering the carbon footprint, the Sonoma Court Apartment project “illustrates a commitment to bringing renewable energy benefits to an underserved segment of the community,” says John Eliason Renewable Energy Power Awards judge and partner at Foley & Lardner LLP. Eliason adds that it, “[will serve] as an example of the proper way to revitalize multifamily housing in a manner that creates benefits to its tenants, as well as a long-term contribution to the outside community” when other projects undergo similar renovations.

Congratulations to Affirmed Housing Group for its focus on small community projects, specifically the Sonoma Court Apartments.
