Bill Introduced to Temporarily Increase LIHTC Allocation in Indiana
Rep. Todd Young, R-Ind., yesterday introduced the Emergency East Chicago Housing Relief Act of 2016 (H.R. 6166) to increase Indiana’s federal low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) allocation in calendar year 2017 and 2018 for affordable rental properties in Lake County, Ind. The legislation would provide an additional allocation amount of $18 multiplied by the population of Lake County, which is about $8.5 million in additional LIHTCs. The proposed LIHTC allocation increase addresses the relocation of approximately 1,100 residents of the West Calumet Housing Complex in East Chicago, Ind., who were informed that their building would close because of health risks linked with high concentrations of lead found on the former lead refinery site. Details of the bill can be found in a section-by-section summary and fact sheet released by Rep. Young’s office.
