Bill Would Provide Tax Credits, Grants for Food Deserts

Friday, August 4, 2017 - 3:45PM

Four Senators introduced legislation this week to provide tax credits and grants for businesses and nonprofits that serve food deserts, as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture. Sens. Mark Warner, D-Va., Jerry Moran, R-Kan., Bob Casey, D-Pa, and Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va. introduced The Healthy Food Access for All Americans Act, which would provide tax credits for new grocery stores and for retrofitting healthy food sections of existing stores in food deserts. The legislation would provide grants to food banks that build new permanent structures in food deserts and temporary access merchants such as farmers markets.
