BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION INCREASES LIHTCS, OTHER FUNDING FOR NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITIES

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 - 7:00AM

A bipartisan coalition of lawmakers last week introduced S. 1352, the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Reauthorization Act of 2013. The bill increases low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) incentives for developments serving Native American communities, eliminates duplicative requirements for housing developments, allows tribes access to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program (HUD-VASH) and promotes clean energy and sustainable projects. It also reauthorizes the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA), which is scheduled to expire Sept. 30. NAHASDA, among other things, provides tribes with community development block grants to assist in housing development. The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
