Freddie Mac Publishes White Papers on LIHTC in Appalachia, Indian Areas
Freddie Mac published two white papers that highlight how the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) is used to bring affordable rental housing to underserved markets. “LIHTC in Rural Middle Appalachia” reports that rental housing is rarer in rural Middle Appalachia than the rest of the nation, but a high percentage of renters live in LIHTC properties. “LIHTC in Indian Areas” says that more than 80,000 LIHTC units are in Indian areas, but not all those properties specifically serve tribal members. The reports are a component of Freddie Mac’s Duty to Serve plan to expand rental and home ownership opportunities in historically underserved markets.
