HUD Finalizes Protection Rules for Violence Survivors
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today finalized a rule to protect housing of survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. HUD’s rule implements provisions in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 2013. It includes provisions that ensure survivors are not punished for being a victim or for being affiliated with a victim. It also provides emergency transfers for survivors, protects against economic and criminal consequences as a survivor and provides the opportunity for self-certification in most circumstances. The rules will be effective 30 days after publication in the Federal Register.
