Homelessness in the United States increased 0.7 percent this year, according to an estimate released today by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD’s 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress states that 554,742 people experienced homelessness for at least one night this year. Thirty states and the District of Columbia reported decreases in homelessness since 2016, but increases in some metropolitan areas–particularly New York City and West Coast cities–contributed to the national increase.
