The National Low-Income Housing Coalition and the Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation today released a report that highlights the need for additional resources for affordable housing, saying nearly 300,000 affordable homes could be lost in the next five years. “2020 Picture of Preservation” reports that only 10 percent of American rental homes are subsidized through federal project-based subsidies and that nearly two-thirds of those homes are more than 20 years old. The report calls for increased federal investment in programs that preserve existing affordable housing, including an expansion of the low-income housing tax credit and full funding for the public housing capital and operating funds.
