Report: School-Worker Wages Often Insufficient to Afford Housing

Wednesday, September 14, 2016 - 12:45PM

The National Housing Conference and the Center for Housing Policy today released, “Paycheck to Paycheck: A Snapshot of Housing Affordability for School Workers,” a report highlighting housing affordability challenges faced by teachers and non-instructional school workers. None of the occupations highlighted in the report (bus driver, child care teacher, groundskeeper, social worker and high school teacher) earned salaries high enough to guarantee being able to afford renting or owning a home in every metro area included in the report. The report said that affordable housing issues can be addressed by successful initiatives that improve housing access for low-and moderate-income households, such as the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC), the Housing Choice Voucher program and HOME funds.
