Trump Orders 30 Percent Tariffs on Imported Solar Panels

Monday, January 22, 2018 - 4:00PM

The United States will impose tariffs of 30 percent on imported solar panels after President Donald Trump issued a decision in response to a petition from American manufacturers Suniva and SolarWorld Americas Inc. The tariffs, which go into effect immediately, were opposed by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), which estimated tens of thousands of job losses in the solar industry due to the higher cost of solar panels, as prices of such panels could double in the United States. The U.S. International Trade Commission last fall sided with the American manufacturers and recommended a 35 percent rate, but the tariffs approved by Trump are lower–30 percent in the first year, dropping by 5 percent for each of the four years in which they will be in place. This was the first use of a trade law authorizing global tariff since President George W. Bush levied tariffs on imported steel in 2002.
