This week I attended the National Council of State Housing Agencies’ 2012 Legislative Conference, “Stand Strong for Housing.”

A highlight for me was a panel with Congressional staff members.  Here are some excerpts of what they had to say:

Speaking about the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit:

  • “You guys have a very good record”
  •  LIHTC is “Integral to the basic production of affordable housing”
  •  LIHTC is “very popular” among members of Congress
  •  Members of Congress “Recognize importance it has in the creation of low-income housing”

Speaking about Tax Reform:

  • “Tax Reform is not going to be easy.”  “There will be winners and losers.”
  • “Whole discussion is not about burning down the house . . . About remodeling the House”
  • “Haven’t seen leadership from executive branch”
  • “everything is in there for a reason”
  • “Question as to whether you have the will to do fundamental tax reform”

Speaking about Tax Extenders:

  • Will be “slogging through extenders again”
  • “Extenders pushed to active Lame Duck session”
  • NMTC is “very popular”
