The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the allocation of $1 billion in funding May 1 to states for COVID-19 relief through the Community Development Block Grant program. The funding is provided under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. The allocation formula emphasizes states hit hardest by unemployment. Every state and insular area will receive a portion of the funds.

HUD Secretary Ben Carson announced May 5 the allocation of $380 million in supplemental administrative fee funding to all public housing authorities (PHAs), including Moving to Work PHAs. The additional funding may be used for traditional administrative fees as well as for new costs related to protecting assisted families and employees through the COVID-19 pandemic.

HUD published a toolkit guide May 28 to provide local leaders with strategies for promoting economic development in federal opportunity zones. “Opportunity Zones Toolkit Volume 2: A Guide to Local Best Practices and Case Studies,” includes background on the incentive strategies and case studies of successful examples.
