Department of Housing and Urban Development News Briefs - December 2023

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded Oct. 19 nearly $103 million in grant funding and loan commitments as part of the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program. The awards will introduce clean and/or zero energy possibilities for 1,500 low-income households in 16 properties that participate in HUD Multifamily Assisted Housing programs to significantly renovate homes to be zero energy and resilient. The program holds deadlines and award dates in multiple categories in 2023 and 2024; the October announcement was for its “Leading Edge” category, the second batch of recipients to date.

HUD published a notice in the Oct. 25 Federal Register listing additional areas subject to small area fair market rents (SAFMRs) in the housing choice voucher program. SAFMRs are ZIP code-based FMRs designed to encourage voucher holders to move to areas with higher opportunity and lower concentration of poverty. The SAFMRs are effective Oct. 1, 2024. Forty-one metro areas across 26 states meet the requirements.
